FELLOWSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)—Administered by the Cornell University East Asia Program

The FLAS provides full tuition payment plus a living stipend. Health insurance and other additional costs are not covered. Applicants can compete for summer-only,
academic-year, or full-year awards.

If you are visiting FALCON from an institution other than Cornell, you may be eligible to receive a FLAS from your home institution and apply it toward FALCON.
Consult your institution to explore this option.

To apply:

  • Download the FLAS Application from the Financial Aid section of the FALCON web site.
  • Submit the completed FLAS application by February 1.
  • Submit GRE general exam scores (or their equivalent) to Cornell University. Please note that there is no Institution Code for FALCON. The Cornell University Graduate School Institution Code is 2098, and the department is Asian Studies.
  • Submit the FALCON application, two letters of recommendation, and official transcripts to the FALCON Program by February 1. Please note that this FLAS deadline is earlier than the normal FALCON application deadline!
  • Special note for Summer FLAS applicants: Those applying only for admission to Summer FALCON are not required to submit recommendations and transcripts. However, to compete for a Summer FLAS, you must submit these materials.

FALCON Semester Scholarship—Administered by the Cornell University Department of Asian Studies

The FALCON Semester Scholarship is a merit-based award that is typically applied to the summer and/or spring semester and covers a significant portion of the spring tuition. Health insurance and other costs are not covered. Both undergraduate-level and graduate-level FALCON applicants are eligible to compete.

Include any information that you feel is relevant—such as noteworthy academic work or awards, how you became interested in the language/culture, any personal experience with the language/culture, etc. Most personal statements are 1–2 pages, double-spaced.
