Course Objectives
This course examines the ways in which Asian Buddhist communities were (and perhaps are) formed through the import-export of monks, texts, and relics, as part of a trade in "orthodoxy," symbolic capital, and magical power. We look at diverse contexts in which such import-export crossed, and shaped, political and other social boundaries in southern Asia, while reflecting on how this approach to the study of Buddhist histories relates to intellectual trajectories in Buddhist Studies, History, and Southeast Asian Studies.
