Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Modern Korean Studies 2010 - 2012

With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, The Department of Asian Studies invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Modern Korean Studies, with a special preference for candidates who work at the intersection of Media Studies and Literature. The ideal candidate would contribute to interdisciplinary and trans-regional/trans-national research and dialogue among faculty members of the Department and in the Humanities at large. Successful candidates will be able to offer a broad interdisciplinary survey course (Introduction to Korea) each fall, as well as one additional upper division course each spring in Korean Studies, such as a course on Korean Film and Media or a course on modern Korean Literature.

Postdoctoral teaching research fellowships in the humanities, awarded for a two-year period beginning July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2012, offer a stipend of $45,000. While in residence at Cornell, postdoctoral fellows hold department affiliation and have limited teaching duties and the opportunity for scholarly work.

Eligibility: Applicants must have received the Ph.D. after September 2004. Applicants who will receive their Ph.D. by June 30, 2010 are eligible to apply. Such applicants must include a letter of confirmation from their committee chair or department stating that the Ph.D. will be conferred before the term of the fellowship begins. International applicants are welcome to apply.

Application Procedures: Applicants should submit the following materials for consideration:

  1. Curriculum vitae.
  2. A detailed statement of current research interests (1,000 - 3,000 words) that clearly outlines the research you will undertake during the term of the fellowship.
  3. One writing sample no longer than 35 pages. (If you wish to have your application materials returned, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.)
  4. A two- to four-page statement of teaching interests and two course proposals (subject area, brief syllabus, proposed methods), for seminars limited to fifteen graduate students and advanced undergraduate students. Each seminar will meet once a week for two hours throughout a fourteen week semester.
  5. Three letters of recommendation.

Application Deadline and Notification of Awards: All application materials (including letters of recommendation) must be postmarked on or before October 1, 2009. Faxed applications will not be accepted. Only fully completed formal applications will be considered. It is your responsibility to ensure that all documentation is complete and that referees submit their letters of recommendation to the Society for the Humanities by the closing date. Awards will be announced in December 2009. Send all materials to:
