The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University invites applications for the position of
Lecturer in Sinhala. The Lecturer in Sinhala will offer instruction at the beginning, intermediate
and advanced levels of colloquial and literary Sinhala, and develop teaching materials for
intermediate and advanced colloquial Sinhala. In addition, all language instructors are responsible
for assistance with registration, student consultations, test administration and grading,
attendance at all staff meetings, and other teaching-related duties. Initial appointment will be
for one academic year, beginning August 15, 2008, with possible renewal and extension contingent
upon merit and the continued availability of program funding.
Candidates must have a minimum of a BA or the equivalent in a relevant discipline, native or
near-native fluency in Sinhala, and the ability to teach at all levels. Prior college level
teaching experience is preferred. Candidates should possess cultural knowledge of Sri Lanka
sufficient for appropriate instruction in colloquial Sinhala. Prior teaching experience in both
colloquial and literary Sinhala preferred.
