Program Description

The EISS program provides full-time intensive English instruction and cultural orientation to prepare students and scholars for studying in an academic environment in the U.S. or using English professionally.  This program is especially beneficial to incoming graduate students or visiting scholars but also welcomes summer students who will return home to continue their studies.

The program features small class size to enhance students' ability to learn English and to enable instructors to provide personal attention and encouragement. In addition to daily classes designed to improve listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar skills.  Under "Academics" you can see a list of Morning Courses and Afternoon Electives.

As members of the Cornell community, EISS participants are eligible to use the Language Resource Center, the Cornell libraries, sports facilities, and on-campus computer labs.  Additionally, students are invited to attend the Summer Session weekly concert and lecture series, and to participate in weekend trips sponsored by the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).

The program attracts participants from many different countries and this summer our students come from  France,  Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Russia, Turkey, Vietnam and China,

The students value not only the academics but also the opportunities for social interaction outside of class.  Last summer we went to a musical theater show, hiked and swam in local parks, had lunches, potluck dinners, and parties where we interacted with native speaker volunteers and their instructors.  After the summer session students stay in touch with each other and their teachers through a list serve; moreover, those who stay here as graduate students have created an informal support network and get together for celebrations, dinners and conversation.
