SWED 1220

Välkommen till andra terminen i svenska!

In this course, participants expand their proficiency in speaking, listening to, reading, and writing Swedish while working with texts in multiple modalities. Particular attention is paid to oral skills, enrichment of language structures, vocabulary (including developing an understanding of connotative meaning), and mastering Swedish texts at the adequate proficiency level. The course continues to explore the culture and societal conditions of Swedish-speaking settings, while discovering the Swedish–American experience. All instruction is in Swedish.

The first part of the course covers chapters 5 and 6 of Lena Trancik’s Virtual Textbook, including our survey of the fundamentals of Swedish grammar, at a rather intense pace. Please always bring the course package to class.  Next, we will have a one-week focus workshop on Swedish phonetics and prosody. Improving productive and receptive oral skills will play a prominent role in this course and thus constitutes a substantial part of the course grade. The third part of the class is dedicated to reading a crime novel (Pyramiden by Henning Mankell, reworked by Johan Werkmäster into more accessible format), excerpts from Astrid Lindgren, and working with cultural texts from press sources, web tools and audio-visual materials. We continue to use A Concise Swedish Grammar. To succeed, prepare assigned material before class, so you can follow along well, and take active part in oral communication and discussions.
