FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) fellowship for Swedish

Swedish is an eligible language for FLAS fellowships, which generally provide full year financial support for pursuing language and area studies coursework. Information and the application form is available online from the Institute for European Studies at Cornell University.

Study abroad in Sweden and Scandinavia

Various opportunities exist for studying in Scandinavia, just to mention a few:

• The Swedish Institute's summer courses. An opportunity to enhance language skills for students who have completed at least one year of Swedish. Students may apply for a scholarship for covering costs (excluding the travel arrangement to Sweden). Application deadline: March 31
  
• Cornell Abroad offers exciting study abroad programs at distinguished Scandinavian institutions, mostly ranging from one semester to a full year. Students can study at Uppsala University, Stockholm University, University of Iceland, and DIS in Copenhagen. It may also be possible to study in Finland. Application deadlines: Sep. 15 (for spring), Feb. 15 (for fall). It is encouraged to apply before the deadlines.
  
• CALS Exchange Programs offers wonderful study abroad exchange programs for CALS students with the following distinguished Scandinavian institutions: Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala University, and the University of Copenhagen (KU).

Grants and fellowships for student research or study in Scandinavia

There are several opportunities for conducting research or study in Scandinavia, among others:

• The Institute for European Studies offers several fellowship and grant opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student research.
• Birgit Baldwin Fellowship in Scandinavian Studies for disseration research by the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies. Application deadline: Nov. 1. Information here.
  
• SASS Swedish Travel Grant is administered by the Consulate General of Sweden in New York and provides $1000 for projects related to Swedish literature, culture and social sciences. Application deadline: April 15.
• The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers fellowships for study in Scandinavia, in particular in relation to dissertation research. Language skills are desired. Application deadline: November 1. Also see the American-Scandinavian Foundation's website for a listing of other opportunities.
  
• SWEA International Scholarship for research on the Swedish language, literature and societythe Swedish language, literature and society. A part of the research should be conducted in Sweden. Application deadline: January 2. provides support in the amount of $10,000 for a doctoral student to conduct dissertation research in relation to
• The Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden supports 1 year of study in Sweden for US residents with Swedish language skills with up to $10,000. Application deadline: November 15.
• Additional funding sources for study and research in Sweden are listed on the webpage of the Consulate General of Sweden (for example, the Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund supports professional development).

Please double-check application deadline dates on the organizations' websites as these may change from year to year. There are other possible funding sources for study and research in Scandinavia (such as Fulbright, ACLS, the Nortana Travel Grant, etc.) Please contact Cecilia to explore  various options.

Incoming students from Scandinavia

• Thanks to Scandianvia Fellowship can be awarded yearly to two incoming students at the graduate level from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. It was created "in gratitude for the humanity and bravery of the people throughout Scandinavia who protected persons of the Jewish faith during and after World War II" (see http://www.gradschool.cornell.edu/?p=37&id=91&a=fs).
